As I did with previous issues I welcome Gothic Horror Fiction and Science fiction but this time around this is the local author issue. I will not consider stories shorter than 2000 words for this magazine, if you write flash fiction consider a different magazine. the seventh issue is the local author issue, so keep that in mind if your submitting to the magazine this time around. I am willing to welcome a larger scope here and looking for stories that are Literary FIction and Weird Inspiratonal (Weird Inspirational, if you have Christian friends who have anthologies of Speculative Fiction they will explain this for you.)
Erotic Fiction of any kind is prohibited and if you attempt to send me a slash story of any kind, you are perminately banned from sending me anything in the future (this is a secular magazine but I have my principles this shit has no place in the magazine. Also attempts to send these to me will be the result of a public insult session on youtube.) I do want fiction to blur the lines between fiction and non-fiction this time around because this is a special issue. Please indicate you're a local author this time around (since the seventh issue is the Local Author Issue.)
Blind Submissions will get a firm e-mail explaining what I want exactly -- 1000 to 1400 word stories don't have a place in this kind of magazine because I published longer stories but if you write one that's 1800 to 1900 words, I will work with you there. I want the story to be convincing but at the same time having a voice that can scare the people just the same. I am very particular in what I am looking for and if you're not a local author -- the story will be held onto for a future issue of the magazine. I will not consider a space opera story because I've seen too many of them. If you write science fiction it better be something that could happen or able to happen in the near future. (Local being Chicago, Joliet, or the other areas in the region. I am looking for authors who hail from Kankakee, Illnois too.)
2500 to 13,000 word submissions are the ones I am looking for and if you want a sample of the kind of story I am looking for be sure to drop me an e-mail and I will send you a story I finished or pick up a copy of Issue Six for an idea what I want. The kind of writers I am influenced by are Richard Matheson, Stephen King, Rod Serling, H.P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe. That should give you a solid idea what I am looking for -- and looking for different walks of life just as long it isn't the one with alternative sexual content. (on thing I will draw the line on here. I have to stick to my principles here.)
There is an age requirement for the magazine too and the minumum age is 18 years old for authors because that will allow you to do signings here and there, but as a publisher I sign in nightclubs so be old enough to go into a night club for a book signing. But going back to what I want here fiction wise -- I don't consider paranormal romance so look on ralan.com for guidelines for that and other publications. If you write sciecne fiction that is your life time, that is what I am looking for. Horror keep in mind I am old school when I write it so I am expecting authors to have that kind of influence and style when sending their stories my way. Bizarro Fiction -- go ahead and show me what you have, just as long you can keep it clean. Graphic Horror Fiction, there is a very good place for that kind of work here but I am trying to focus more on the weird, if you want to send me something graphic go ahead there will be an anthology I am planning here too down the road so yeah there will be something for it.
I want the stories that people will look at you like you have seven heads for writing. I am trying to get enough stories to fill a 180 page magazine at least or at least 200 pages. The previous issue of the magazine was 189 pages. I am the in house interviewer so don't send me interviews. Any interviews included in the magazine will be done by me. 15 to 16 stories will be picked per issue for the magazine that are works of fiction, and about 3 stories that are non-fiction will be provided plus the editor submission. National writers will be considered again for issue eight and nine, issue 10 will be the local author too. Nothing Perverse, is all I ask. I am a reasonable editor to work with here afterall I am also a writer.
.doc format, 1.5 spaced, indent story after first paragraph. Rockwell, Goudy Old Style, or Courier font (no underlining for bold or italic, use the actual bold and italics.)
NON-FICTION GUIDELINES:
I want stories that are scary but able to keep the reader reading, authors must include pictures too with their story here. Non-fiction writers must have a bio and included with their photo. Autobiographies are welcomed here but don't give me your entire life story. Keep the story between 2000-6000 words if it is a true story. Limit of four true stories per issue. Autobiographical stories in this issue can come from a darker Christian perspective too. No devotionals, just scare the living crap out of someone while doing it. Be it surreal or be it dark. (true stories get a flat rate of $10. )
PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDELINES:
PNG or .JPG format – black and white photos only. No nudity or suggestive themes. Submissions with nudity or suggestive themes will blacklisted from submitting to the magazine in the future. (Come on this is a PG-13 rated magazine and Lightly R rated at most.)
PAY RATES:
Fiction will be looking at $15 but authors who were in Tabloid Purposes get an additional amount of cash and minimum payment is $10.00 for a short story. You must have a paypal account to get paid. International authors will get a .pdf copy of the magazine. The authors will get paid $15 for their short story (this is effective after October 2007.) There are no reading fees, and authors will retain the rights to the story after publication since this is published with lulu.com. It helps to get a previous issue of the magazine before submitting to the magazine. This is flat rate guys I am a one man show when it comes to publishing this magazine.
PDF copies of the magazine are provided by donations via Paypal, since this is a one person show I wish I could pay more for stories but that is the best I can do guys plus oppertunities for book signings in the Chicago area if you live in Illinois. There is a smaller submission window with issue six than other issues because this will be cutting into anthology break (what I call editing an anthology.) Support the magazine by buying copies of it, and that way if you are contributing to future issues you'd know what kind of stories I want for it.
